Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) the first of the best self defense styles
BJJ is one of the best self defense styles because it doesn’t depend on the size of your body. Both small and big are in a position to use this self-defense technique. BJJ is a combat sport that is efficient when fighting on the streets. Through the method, you master how to bring down to the ground an opponent through throws and trips.
The BJJ style further enables you to learn the steps you need to take when you end up on the ground while fighting. The submissions that can help you bounce back while on the floor include chokes, arm bars, and ankle locks.
Moreover, you learn the technique of getting out of a risky situation using sweeps. For example, you can trap the arms and legs of the opponent and make them lose balance. The move helps you to get back on top and with maximum control.
This art will teach you how to use leverage and deal with different levels of strength from different size opponents, once skilled you will be a dangerous person to attack one-to-one. Due to the nature of the training and techniques you will gain overall body fitness and great arms and hands strength, developing biceps and triceps.

Filipino Martial Arts (FMA)
Filipino martial arts is a collection of military martial arts from the Philippines. FMA was developed to protect the country from soldiers. The stronghold of the style is hand-to-hand combat skills.
The first step of FMA is learning about all the weapons and how to use them. After that, you know how to defend against the weapons, and finally, you master striking techniques and grappling.
There are a number of arts to choose from but I would recommend checking out one of my recent post on Silat, this art is also trained in the Philippines, Please check my post below this will give you great details on Silat
Muay Thai
The style is also known as The Art of Eight Limbs. It entails striking the opponent by the use of legs, knees, fists, and elbows. Muay Thai focuses on powerful standing techniques. However, all the strikes used to start from the ground
You can practice this style through sparring. For instance, you can imagine that someone is coming to attack you and practice how you will take a punch this is known as shadow sparring and is used in many martial arts for solo training.
Plenty of bag work and condition training is required making the body not only strong but conditioned to take blows using different training methods and equipment. Powerful knees and elbows will render your opponent unable to continue their attack.
The physical training is excellent with running skipping bag work sparring, you will lose weight and be very fit, This may appeal to you as fitness and sparring maybe something you wish to work on.

Krav Maga
The style was designed specifically for the Israeli military. Krav Maga borrowed the technique from boxing, jiu-jitsu, and other combat martial art. You learn how to target the attacker’s vulnerable body parts. Additionally, the martial arts style helps you to know how to use anything close to you as a weapon. You also learn how to defend against guns, knives, and other weapons.
A great system of self defense for those who just want to learn to defend themselves in the quickest way possible without all the history or linage or traditions which some martial arts spend time teaching. It covers every situation possible. Using principles including developing aggression, striking the opponent until incapacitated, using any objects to hand, training full awareness of surrounding, responding to attacks under pressure and much more….

Mixed martial arts (MMA)
MMA is a strict sport formed through a combination of martial arts style varieties. Most of the borrowed sports include Boxing, Judo, Taekwondo, Wrestling, Muay Thai, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The technique involves taking down the opponent, standing up, and striking.
Opponents attack when you least expect it. You can be attacked while at home or on the streets. It is essential to know how you can defend yourself when an opponent attacks you. Strive to read informative martial arts books that will give you an idea of the many self-defense styles available and practice using them.
I would say this is the most versatile due to the combination of the martial art styles above you will be able to fight martial artists from any discipline empty hand, more importantly fight them in their preferred method which could be ground fighting, standing toe to toe, semi close, or close, kicking, punching , locks…… but with so much t learn this should not be taken lightly, You will have to train extra hard to become proficient at all those techniques. This make this my preferred out of the best self defense styles from this short list.

Thanks for bringing us this great post in self defense.
I must admit that I had no idea that there were so many different styles. And you probably havent covered them all either
As you say, we could be attacked at any time and anywhere. You therefore need to be prepared to be able to defend yourself.
Apart from the self defense, the exercise in itself is well worth taking it up.
